The Requirements
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:- A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with emphasis in English, journalism, mass communications or public relations is desired.
- At least 6 years of progressive experience in writing and copyediting for publications with extensive experience in editing final copy, including content, format, and grammar. Quick question for you - click here
- Experience in dealing with electronic and print media and developing and implementing public relations and communications plans.
- A high-level of proficiency using computer equipment and software including Microsoft Office products. Experience working with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and HTML is preferred.
- Photography and desktop publishing experience is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with federal, state and local law enforcement, judicial systems, investigative techniques, law enforcement operations, other justice programs and related activities is also a plus.
The Role
Reporting to the Communications Manager, you'll be responsible for creating original content and performing advanced writing, copyediting, and proofing to produce high quality information that markets and communicates our services and mission. In a nutshell, you'll be the "go-to" person for all aspects of the written word. Working on both electronic and print communication pieces, you'll work to promote and maintain a positive corporate image and brand identity among media covering white collar and high-tech crime.As Senior Writer/Editor, you will also be tasked with seeking out opportunities to advance our mission and educate law enforcement about our services and initiatives. You'll constantly be on the look-out for interesting topics and events to cover. Your days will be varied and may include everything from interviewing a subject matter expert on an emerging segment of high-tech crime, or partnering with other team members to brainstorm article ideas and lay-out suggestions for our quarterly Informant magazine. More specifically, you will:
- Prepare, edit, and publish publications by the assigned deadline dates.
- Work with the Graphic Designer and print vendors to establish mutually agreed upon deadlines, correct proofs, proofread, and generally ensure high quality for the publications.
- Work with communications staff and other departments to develop and implement a comprehensive production schedule for publications including magazine, newsletters and other collateral material.
- Plan, develop, and write the annual reports for NW3C and the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a partnership between NW3C and the FBI.
- Write and assist in the development of marketing materials, event materials and special projects.
- Write and edit member newsletter.
- Write and co-edit the Informant magazine.
- Contribute content to the company Web site.
- Plan, develop and coordinate NW3C's photographic needs as related to publications.
- Monitor membership demographics, concerns and activities and integrate this knowledge into the overall communications plan to more effectively reach members and the public through NW3C's outreach and communication efforts.
- Write and/ or edit media releases prior to distribution as needed.
- Represent NW3C in a professional manner at events and trade shows.
- Be responsible for developing positive relationships with reporters/editors to gain positive media publicity.
- Assist in writing speeches and/or remarks for representatives of NW3C.
